New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
